At Wavendon Gate School, every pupil should have the opportunity to grow, succeed and achieve their full potential. We are committed to an inclusive education, with high expectations for all pupils and support that helps each child take part in learning and school life.

Our ethos, “We Grow Success,” is reflected in how we identify and respond to pupils’ needs. We work in partnership with families, listen to pupils’ views, and aim to provide a safe, happy environment where everyone is treated with respect and kindness.

Our approach to SEND

We aim to:

  • identify additional needs as early as possible and respond to them effectively
  • make sure teachers understand the needs of the pupils they teach
  • provide a broad and balanced curriculum, adapted to meet individual needs
  • maintain high ambitions and expectations for pupils with SEND
  • work with families; the local authority; and relevant health, social care and specialist services
  • enable every pupil to participate fully in learning and wider school life.

Identifying needs and planning support

A pupil may need extra help for a range of reasons. Concerns may be raised by a parent or carer, a pupil, a class teacher or another professional. We draw on classroom observations, assessment information, and conversations with the pupil and family to understand what is working well and where barriers to learning or well-being may be present.

The class teacher remains responsible for the pupil’s learning. Where additional support is needed, teachers plan targeted or personalised provision, with advice from the SENDCO and, where appropriate, external specialists. Pupils may have a Personal Provision Plan setting out relevant targets and support.

Support and progress are monitored and reviewed so that provision can be adapted when a pupil’s needs or circumstances change. Parents and carers are important partners in discussing progress, outcomes and any changes to support.

Teaching and provision

Pupils access the curriculum through classroom teaching and adaptations suited to their needs. Depending on the pupil, support may include:

  • adapted tasks, resources or ways of recording work
  • additional teacher or teaching assistant support
  • visual timetables and clear routines
  • targeted small-group or one-to-one teaching
  • pre-teaching or extra practice to build confidence and consolidate learning
  • support from the SENDCO or advice from an outside agency.

Support is selected to suit the pupil; not every strategy will be appropriate for every child.

Independence, well-being and participation

We want pupils to develop confidence, independence and positive relationships. Depending on their needs, support may include mentoring, nurture time, social or classroom-skills groups, personalised behaviour plans, or help at less structured times of the day. A quiet space and structured activities may also be used where appropriate to help a pupil feel settled and ready to learn. These activities may take place in the Rainbow Room, our pastoral support space.

Our school values guide how we build an inclusive community: Respect and Kindness help pupils feel safe and welcome, while Self-belief and Growth encourage them to take on challenges and recognise their progress. We aim to make school activities accessible so that pupils with SEND can take a full and active part in school life.

Staff expertise and working with specialists

Staff develop their knowledge of SEND through regular training and professional support.

When a pupil’s needs require additional expertise, we work with relevant local authority services and other professionals. Depending on the circumstances, this may include health, social care or voluntary sector organisations. We share information and plan support with parents and carers, while taking account of the pupil’s views.

Admissions and the Local Offer

Pupils with SEND are considered fairly through the admissions process. Milton Keynes Council’s arrangements and oversubscription criteria apply; a child should not be refused admission simply because they have SEND or it is claimed that the school cannot meet their needs.

The Milton Keynes SEND Local Offer provides information about support and services available in the area:
