    School medical procedures

At Wavendon Gate School, we want pupils to feel safe, supported and able to take part in school life. Please tell us about your child’s medical needs, allergies, prescribed medication or changes to their health as soon as possible.

    Sharing and recording information

We use MediTracker to record relevant medical information and incidents so that authorised staff can access the information they need. Please provide any care or action plan given by a healthcare professional and tell us about:

    • medication your child may need in school, including emergency medication
    • how and when it should be available
    • practical steps that help keep your child safe, such as avoiding a known allergen
    • whether your child can manage any part of their care independently.

We will discuss arrangements with you and, where appropriate, your child. School staff follow healthcare professionals’ instructions; they do not make clinical assessments. Please let us know if your child’s needs or medication change so the record and arrangements can be reviewed.

Accidents and first aid during the school day

If your child has an accident or is given first aid at school, staff will provide appropriate support and record what happened in MediTracker, a secure online portal, as soon as reasonably practicable. The record will include who was involved, what happened and where, the response and medical support provided, and how the incident concluded.

We will inform you the same day, or as soon as reasonably practicable, about any accident or injury and any first aid treatment given to your child. This is often through an automatic email for minor injuries or a direct phone call for more serious injuries, including head bumps.

  • Illnesses

Check the table below if you are uncertain whether your child can come to school due to illness. Make sure you ring up the school to notify us of your child’s absence and when they will return. If you are unsure, please ring the office and speak to a member of staff who can advise you.

  • Prescribed medication

We can only administer medicines to the children if they have been prescribed by a doctor.

We will require a “Prescribed Medication” form to be completed for any medication that is to be administered at school.

We are unable to administer expired medication; it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that medication kept at school is in date.

  • Epipens or Anapens

If your child has severe allergies that may require an EpiPen or Anapen, we request that two are kept at school and that a care plan is completed.

Both EpiPens are stored in the Admin Office.

When your child is on a school trip, both ‘pens’ and any other medicine needed will be taken with them.

The school also has two emergency EpiPens that can be administered if required.

  • Inhalers

If your child requires an inhaler, we ask that it be kept at school. It will be kept in the year group area so that it is close to your child during class-based activities and can be administered by the teacher or teaching assistant. The school also has two emergency inhalers that are kept in the admin office for school trips and general use if required.

  • Sickness & diarrhoea

If your child is sick at school or at home, they cannot attend school until they have been clear of their sickness or diarrhoea for 48 hours after their last episode.

  • Hand gel stations

The school has hand gel stations in each of the pupil areas, outside of their toilet blocks, so that pupils can sanitise their hands with ease whenever they wish to. The hand gel stations help to prevent the spread of infection when used correctly.

  • Keeping healthy

We are constantly working on further development of our curriculum to ensure that pupils are aware of health issues such as eating a balanced diet and drinking water throughout the day.

We are a very active school when it comes to curriculum-based sport, lunchtime activities and after-school clubs. We have a very large number of children involved in sport-related activities on a daily basis, and many of our teams do well in local competitions. We also hold a variety of ‘Healthy Living’ events and curricular activities.
