Our Curriculum

At Wavendon Gate School, our curriculum is ambitious, broad and balanced. It meets and exceeds the expectations of the National Curriculum, giving every pupil the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to succeed at school and beyond.

Our carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum builds from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to the end of Key Stage 2. New learning connects to what pupils already know, with important concepts, vocabulary and skills revisited and developed over time. This progression helps pupils deepen their subject knowledge and disciplinary skills and prepares them for the transition to secondary school.

We are committed to an inclusive curriculum in which every pupil is supported to belong, achieve and thrive. We plan for the range of strengths, needs and starting points in our school, adapting teaching and removing barriers while maintaining high expectations. Clear explanations, structured routines, accessible resources and opportunities to practise help pupils engage with ambitious learning. Where pupils need additional support, it builds on strong classroom teaching and is carefully matched to their needs.

We want every child to become a confident, fluent reader. Reading opens access to the wider curriculum and to “the best that has been thought and said”. Across the school, pupils develop strong foundations in reading, writing and spoken language. They encounter a wide range of high-quality texts, build rich vocabulary and learn about the world. Teachers explicitly teach the knowledge and language pupils need to understand what they read, express their ideas and communicate effectively.

Our curriculum develops curiosity, aspiration, and an appreciation of the wider world and pupils’ place within it. We strengthen oracy and critical thinking by giving pupils the knowledge and language to explain, discuss and question. Planned enrichment deepens learning and builds cultural capital, while celebrating the diverse people and contributions that have shaped different fields of knowledge and achievement.

British Values and our school values are woven through learning and school life. Through respect, kindness, honesty, courtesy, self-belief and growth, pupils learn to understand and live the values that help them contribute positively to their community and the wider world.

We want Wavendon Gate pupils to leave as knowledgeable, literate and thoughtful young people: confident in their learning, empathetic towards others, and ready to thrive in the next stage of their education and in life.
